Thomas P. Scharnitz, MD

Board-Eligible Dermatologist

Dr. Thomas P. Scharnitz is a Dermatologist who completed his dermatology residency at the University of Michigan. Originally from Pennsylvania, he attended both college and medical school at The Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State, he was intimately involved in many volunteer programs and was inducted into multiple honor societies.

Given his interest in all facets of medicine, Dr. Scharnitz chose a rigorous internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia where he rotated through various hospital wards and intensive care units. Upon completion of this internship, Dr. Scharnitz attended the prestigious dermatology program at the University of Michigan. 

At the University of Michigan Dr. Scharnitz completed intensive training in general dermatology, dermatology surgery, cosmetic dermatology, dermoscopy, teledermatology, and inpatient consults. He received extensive complex dermatology training through dedicated Immunobullous, Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma (CTCL), Melanoma, and Cutaneous Surgery Oncology specialty clinics.

Dr. Scharnitz also has an interest in advancing the field of dermatology through research. He has published many papers and has presented at numerous national and international conferences, including publishing review articles for the International Psoriasis Council. Dr. Scharnitz plans to continue his research efforts here at The Clinical Research Center of the Carolinas, DLCC’s research affiliate.

Dr. Scharnitz has a passion for ethical patient care and believes that strong patient-physician relationships are vital to providing exceptional outcomes. He believes dermatology is a dynamic field and therefore utilizes innovative diagnostic methods and treatments. Given the breadth of his training, Dr. Scharnitz has an interest in all dermatology conditions, with a special interest in the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancers. 

In his free time, Dr. Scharnitz enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his family, friends, and his Goldendoodle, Mercer. He also enjoys all types of outdoor and athletic activities from attending gym classes to hiking and kayaking.
