Medical Microneedling: Collagen Induction Skin Therapy
Microneedling skin therapy utilizes micro needles in a small cartridge to create invisible micro perforations in the epidermis and the top layer of the dermis. The process stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and to start producing collagen and elastin to repair these micro-perforations. The self-repairing property of the skin is a 100% natural form of skin renewal from the inside out. This repair process begins almost immediately and results in a thicker dermis and softened wrinkles or scars. We use state-of-the-art medical-grade microneedling devices with single-use sterile needle cartridges and are the only medical practice in the Lowcountry to offer the new SkinPen® Precision system.
As a result, your skin becomes firmer and regains its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced, pores become finer, circulation is stimulated and the overall condition of the skin improves.
What are the benefits of Microneedling?
- Minimizes pore size
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
- Lifts, tightens, rejuvenates skin
- Improves appearance of stretch marks
- Improves the appearance of scars
- Improves the appearance of acne scarring
- How does Microneedling work?
Microneedling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of precise micro-injuries in the dermis, including the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back, automatically triggering new collagen and elastin, the two proteins predominantly responsible for the structure of the skin, and without causing scar tissue formation. Microneedling has been safely used in patients with all skin types.
The complete procedure typically takes about an hour –depending on the size and number of areas treated and previous damage to the skin– and results in little to no downtime.
Preparing for Microneedling
It is important that you adhere to certain guidelines to gain optimal results:
- Avoid retinoids and sun exposure for 48 hours prior to treatment.
- Do not schedule this procedure if you have used Accutane within the past 6 months, have an active skin infection, or have had radiation in the past year to the area to be treated.
What Happens During The Treatment?
Based on your needs, we may apply a topical numbing agent to ensure your comfort.
Treatments may range from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Most patients report feeling a slight vibration and tingling during the procedure.
Following the procedure, we will apply a soothing serum to hydrate, calm and protect the skin.
Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (PRP)
For enhanced rejuvenation and correction, Platelet Rich Plasma can be added to your microneedling treatment. Talk with our esthetician about adding this treatment.
What Happens Post-Treatment?
Most patients look as though they have a moderate sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. There may be minimal pin-point bleeding or bruising and swelling. This is normal and subsides after 1 – 2 hours. You should see redness fade within 24 hours. We may prescribe an approved post-procedure skincare product. We will also provide you with post skincare regimen formulated specifically for your needs.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
Microneedling can be safely repeated every 3-6 weeks until you achieve the desired results. Each individual responds differently to treatments. While most people see results after one treatment, we recommend a series of 5-6 treatments for optimum results.
