Stop! And Freeze!: My CoolSculpting Story
Our Certified Physician Assistant Gina O’ Callaghan, PA-C, shares her experience with CoolSculpting following the birth of her baby.
Stop! and Freeze! the fat away…
That is exactly what I did with CoolSculpting® at Dermatology and Laser Center of Charleston. Recently I was blessed with a healthy baby boy, however it came with some extra baby weight. I am still trying to find the balance of working full time, being a new mommy and trying to get back to pre-pregnancy weight. I found that CoolSculpting was a great and easy way to help aide me in getting back into those pre-pregnancy pants! CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for fat reduction, and once that fat is gone, it’s gone for good! My lower abdomen was always a trouble area prior to my recent pregnancy and afterwards I knew I would have trouble getting that area back into shape. CoolSculpting was easily done during my lunch break and I was literally able to go right back to work after the procedure. Also, I was not inhibited in any way from doing my mommy duties after work.
Prior to my treatment with CoolSculpting, I was evaluated to make sure I would be a good candidate for the procedure. The morning of the procedure I had ‘before photos’ taken and was accurately assessed to determine how the CoolSculpting Advantage hand pieces would fit on me.
What happens during the CoolSculpting procedure?
A certified CoolSculpting technician began the process by placing a thin gel pad over my lower abdominal area, where the hand piece would be placed. This gel pad would be used to help protect my skin from being damaged by the freezing treatment. Then the technician placed the hand piece over the area and smiled as she told me it was time. Countdown…3-2-1, suction!! As soon as the CoolSculpting machine was turned on, my skin and fat were quickly pulled up into the hand piece. At the beginning of the treatment the area became very cold, it was mild discomfort but not painful. It actually reminded of when I would go outside during the cold winters up in Michigan, and having my fingertips become so cold they eventually went numb. The mild discomfort only lasted 5-10 minutes; then my lower abdomen went numb and I was able to enjoy the rest of my treatment.
A massage of the area aids fat breakdown
Once the CoolSculpting process is completed, a 2-minute massage over the area was performed to break up the crystallized fat cells and to assist in their disposal. The massage is mildly discomforting but not painful. It feels like the skin warming back up when you come back inside the house after spending an extended amount of time outside during the winter months.

Thawing after the freeze and final results
After my first Coolsculpting treatment in June, my lower abdomen was numb and occasionally tingly for the first 5-6 weeks. I sometimes couldn’t feel my lower abdomen especially when getting dressed in the mornings. My lower abdomen felt slightly bloated for the first 4-6 weeks. I felt minimal soreness in the treated area, but it was tolerable enough to continue my daily activities and being an active mom. Within the first 4 weeks of that treatment, I could see results and my pre-pregnancy clothing was fitting better. I had a second treatment on my abdomen 2 months later, in August. Once again, after the treatment I had some numbness, bloating and tingling in my treatment area for 4-6 weeks, and I saw results within 8 weeks. Following this round of treatment, my pre-pregnancy clothing is fitting even better and I’m feeling more comfortable about my body. Coolsculpting is a great option for any new mom who is looking for a jumpstart to get back into shape!
