A Little Injury Goes a Long Way

Renew your skin's appearance with micro-needling or other minimally invasive therapies.

This article by our founder, Dr. Todd E. Schlesinger, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dermasurgeon and Cosmetic Dermatologist, provides insight into the science behind the body’s healing process which is employed to improve the signs of aging.

The process of wound healing starts when there is damage to the skin. The damage begins the wound healing process termed a “cascade.” When the skin is damaged, the cascade begins which consists of three phases of wound healing including the:

  • inflammatory phase
  • proliferative phase
  • remodeling phase.

Through years of research, it has been discovered that we can use this cascade to our advantage when it comes to reducing fine lines and wrinkles. This is done through the second part of the wound healing cascade, the proliferative phase. The most important step of this process for anti-aging is that the body produces new collagen and elastin which is sent to the areas of skin injury. These new factors get to the skin wound and are laid down in a systemic and organized fashion to replace the old and damaged collagen and elastin which enhances wound healing. Another benefit includes an increase in blood vessels to the area. This is a great discovery when talking about fighting the physical appearance of aging. When the body creates new collagen and elastin in the skin, this gives the “new” skin more elasticity and tightness, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing pore size, and improving circulation in your skin which overall provides a more youthful appearance. You can see why this is a great option for use in anti-aging.

Minimally invasive procedures improve skin aging

As we all age, our skin loses collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkled and loose skin. But as dermatological providers, we can do minimally invasive procedures to help stimulate the proliferative phase of wound healing which activates cellular regeneration. And because of this we can do targeted therapies which stimulate the skin to release its own new collagen and elastin, as well as growth factors which all provide a younger appearance. The best part about the therapies we provide using the wound healing process for anti-aging is that we cause your body do all the work naturally after the procedure!

At the Dermatology and Laser Center of Charleston we can use little, superficial injuries to do major work in improving appearance. We provide several procedures that are safe, therapeutic options using this research including:
