Day Spa or Medical Spa: How They Differ
Ashley Davis, Licensed Esthetician at Dermatology & Laser Center of Charleston has authored this blog post to help you comprehend the difference between and Day Spa and a Medical Spa.
Do you know the differences between a Day Spa and a Medical Spa?
Many times, we decide to improve our appearance and do something nice for ourselves and our skin. When that thought comes to mind, a lot of people think “I need a facial” and do a search for the nearest spa on the internet. And subsequently, a huge list of day spas and medical spas (also referred to as a med-spa or medispa) are presented. But what — exactly — is the difference between a day spa and a medical spa?
Spas are not created equal
It’s a spa, right? They all do facials; how different can they possibly be? The answer is a simple, they are very different. While both establishments offer facial treatments, the treatments in a day spa are typically geared towards relaxation, appearance and lifestyle. The treatments they offer reflect such and include spa facials, massages, body wraps and makeup application.
A Medispa is more results-oriented than relaxation-oriented.
Dermatology and Laser Center of Charleston operates a Medispa Spa where we are able to offer a wider and more complex range of services that help transform the skin and body in more effective ways than a standard day spa. Because of this affiliation with a medically licensed provider we have access to more potent, higher quality active ingredients and the ability to utilize more techniques and implement various technology-driven procedures. Technology in the cosmetic medical field advances rapidly; at our Medispa, we offer the newest state-of-the-art devices that get better results with less discomfort and downtime. And we carry medical grade skin care products to further promote and enhance your experience at home.
Treatments and Services Offered.
Our medispa offers a range of treatments including (but not limited to):
Medical Grade Facials: These are more targeted towards the correction of acne, unevenness of skin texture & tone, dehydration, dullness and dryness of the skin. These treatments may vary from a custom spa-like facial to treatments including modalities using microdermabrasion technology like the HydraFacial and Vibradermabrasion.
Chemical Peels: A blend of exfoliating acids are applied to the skin to provide correction and minimization of pigmentation issues, fine lines & wrinkles, and uneven tone.
Micro-Needling: Or Collagen Induction Therapy utilizes a device, like the FDA-Approved SkinPen Precision, that contains several needles to create micro wounds in the surface of the skin to stimulate the skin’s natural wound healing process. This process helps to aid in the production of collagen, the component of skin that gives it it’s thickness, to reduce the appearance of acne-scarring, wrinkles and stretch marks.
Radio-Frequency & Lasers: Use various levels (wavelengths) of energy to create change in the skin to improve the skin’s tone, texture, elasticity, reduce hair growth and remove tattoos.
