What are Growth Factors: Learn how they improve your skin
Our founder, Dr. Todd E. Schlesinger, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dermasurgeon and Cosmetic Dermatologist discusses growth factors and how they can help externally to promote improved skin.
What are Growth Factors?
We all have growth factors that we are born with, which are little proteins inside our body that regulate growth on a cellular level. As we age these factors can become depleted. The reason this is important is that growth factors in dermatology can play a critical role by improving the look and quality of your skin. Your skin is composed of several layers, including the epidermis (the skin we all see) and the dermis (the tissue underneath the epidermis).
The roles of growth factors for our appearance are numerous. First, growth factors go to the layers of the skin and help promote tissue repair and regeneration. These factors can also help in the skin’s softness and elasticity by promoting the formation of collagen and elastin. Yet another role of growth factors in your skin is their key role in skin repair after injury. These multiple jobs of growth factors work together to create a more youthful appearance.
How Growth Factors Can Be Used to Help Your Skin
As we age, our skin tends to lose collagen and elasticity as well as stopping regeneration and repair after damage. When thinking of everything that damages your skin throughout your life, including the natural again process and sun damage, it adds up over time leading to wrinkles, inelastic skin, enlarged pores, and an uneven skin tone. Though growth factors are made inside our bodies, we can use them to our advantage on the outside of our bodies as well. Applying growth factors topically to the skin can trigger the natural healing process of the skin and provide that more youthful appearance we discussed earlier. Putting these factors on our epidermis, they can penetrate down and into the skin and do their job. So finding a topical skin cream with growth factors can improve our cosmetic appearance by:
- Creating new collagen which is involved in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Decreasing pore size
- Improving skin texture and decrease roughness
- Skin tightening and smoothing
- Enhancing wound healing
