My CoolSculpting Experience
Being the Director of Laser and MediSpa Services* for 12 years at Dermatology and Laser Center of Charleston, I try everything we offer. Not only because I will try just about everything for the great results, but, I want to be very clear to our patients exactly what to expect and feel during and after a treatment. What better way than to experience it yourself.
Four years ago we started offering CoolSculpting as a fat reduction procedure. CoolSculpting crystallizes or freezes fat cells causing them to die. Your body then naturally processes the dead fat cells and eliminates them over a period of 8-12 weeks. This process does not require surgery, anesthesia, has very low risks and no downtime. It is very customizable to individual needs. The fat cells targeted are only those in stubborn, superficial fat: those lumps and bumps we cannot get rid of no matter what we do. Each treatment, on average, will reduce 22-25% of superficial fat cells. This is not a treatment for the person who has to lose 30 or more pounds. CoolSculpting provides a a permanent fat reduction because the targeted fat cells are eliminated.
Your first CoolSculpting appointment: what to expect
At your appointment we will counsel you about CoolSculpting and make certain all your questions about the procedure are answered. If you’re ready to begin CoolSculpting, you will sign a consent form and have photos taken and get weighed. Before and after photos will aid us in evaluating your results. A template of the handpiece that is to be used will be drawn on the area of your body to be treated. This ensures proper placement. Then a cool and sticky gel pad will be placed on the area treated and the handpiece is applied to the area. You will experience immediate suction and pulling. Depending on the handpiece, the intensity of the suction will vary. During my treatment, I had my flanks (love handles) and lower abdomen treated The suction and pressure on my abdomen were intense and, tolerable. As the area cools, the sensation lessens. My flanks did not experience as much sensation as did my abdomen.
What happens during the CoolSculpting application?
Now, you relax. In our CoolSculpting treatment room, we have TV, complimentary WiFi and great magazines which you may make use of during your treatment. Some patients work, read, or sleep for the duration of the treatment. We have two CoolSculpting machines allowing us to DualSculpt, so a love handle and an abdomen can be treated at the same time — cutting the treatment time in half.
When the cooling is finished we release the suction and perform a 2 minute massage to help reduce the fat even more. It’s a strange sensation and many patients say it is their least favorite part of the treatment. Some say it feels similar to the sensations you experience when your foot falls asleep, or kneading dough, and others describe it as crampy and tender. However, these feelings are short in duration as we soon move on to another area. Since this treatment is completely non-surgical, most patients can return to normal activities immediately. Some even return to work after their treatment is over.
What should I expect after my CoolSculpting treatment?
For 2 weeks or more you will have a sense of numbness in the treated area. For the first week that area may feel tender, crampy and bloated. By the second week post treatment, treated areas will be itchy and, sometimes, you may experience a pins and needles sensation that usually subsides within a few days.
It is not unusual to start seeing reduction at four weeks post treatment and gradual reduction through 12 weeks. I am very pleased with my results and hope my next treatment will be very soon. The reason CoolScupting is the #1 non invasive fat reduction procedure in the world is because it works!
