Cosmetic Dermal Fillers and Volumizers 101
What are fillers and what do they do?
A cosmetic injectable such as a dermal filler or volumizer is a great option to help replenish volume loss due to the natural processes of aging. An alternative to surgery, dermal fillers or volumizers can be injected in nearly any area of the face, and, depending on the product selected, can last from 6 months up to 5 years.
The types of dermal fillers and volumizers we offer here at Dermatology and Laser Center fall into three basic categories: Hyaluronic Acid fillers, Synthetic fillers and Collagen fillers
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Dermal Fillers
HA naturally occurs throughout the body, offering structure to facial features in the face and lips. This category of fillers includes: BELOTERO BALANCE®, JUVÉDERM®, Perlane®, Restylane® and Voluma®. Ideal for moderate to severe facial wrinkles, these fillers work best in different areas of the face. Your board-certified dermatologist may suggest the use of one or more different fillers depending on the areas you are interested in treating. The longevity of HA fillers ranges from about 6 months to up to 2 years, but improved volume is seen immediately. Learn more about our HA Fillers here!
A smaller category of dermal fillers and volumizers, Synthetic fillers are created in a lab with materials to be found compatible with those naturally occurring in the face. This category of fillers which includes both Radiesse® and Sculptra® Aesthetic generally tend to last a bit longer than HA fillers. Synthetic fillers are best for deeper set wrinkles and have shown to act as a base support for the natural production of the body’s own collagen. While Radiesse® offers immediate results, Sculptra® increases volume gradually and results are seen over time. Learn more about our Synthetic Dermal Fillers here!
Collagen fillers were one of the first cosmetic dermal fillers and volumizers created. At Dermatology and Laser Center of Charleston, we offer one type of Collagen Filler – Artefill®. A makeup of bovine collagen and microspheres, this dermal filler requires a skin allergy test to be conducted two weeks prior to injection. Over time the bovine collagen breaks down while the PMMA particles (the microspheres) remain intact. This is the property which allows the microsphere-enhanced Collagen Filler to offer immediate results which can last up to 5 years. Learn more about our Collagen Filler here!
Regardless of which filler peaks your interest, we highly recommend verifying your injector has been trained through the company on the filler or volumizer you are interested in receiving, as well as making sure the product you are about to have injected is distributed directly from the company. The skill of the injector plays a defining factor in the outcome of your treatment, and knowing your desired look will help greatly before and during your appointment. While selecting which dermal filler or volumizer is right for you can be a daunting task to under take, it pays in the end to do a little research before your appointment.
