Acne Scarring Treatment with Bellafill®
Our founder, Todd E. Schlesinger MD, FAAD, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dermasurgeon and Cosmetic Dermatologist discusses the use of Bellafill to treat moderate to severe acne scars.
Do you suffer embarrassment due to acne scars?
Acne scarring can be a constant visible reminder of days gone by when you suffered from inflamed, often painful and obvious acne bumps. Acne scars come in three main forms. Some are thicker and some are flat. Others still look like little ice pick marks, but the majority of them have a rolling appearance with shallow edges. They look like craters on the moon to some people! For a long time now, there were not many good options for treatment. Lasers seemed to take too long to show results and the fillers that were available just didn’t work very well or have results that lasted.
What treatments are available to minimize acne scarring?
What if you knew of a treatment with a patient satisfaction rate over 90 percent at one year? One that produced an immediate result with minimal to no downtime? What if that same treatment was associated with an amazing safety profile, and one that produced a long-lasting correction?
Well, now you have it! In 2014, a company called Suneva Medical produced just that treatment using a skin filler that has been in use for 10 years. Bellafil® is a collagen-based filler with tiny microspheres suspended within. It works by first filling in the acne scar defect, but not only that, the microspheres cause your body to replace the filler’s collagen with its own. That’s why the results last so long. Bellafill is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of moderate to severe atrophic, distensible facial acne scars on the cheek in people over the age of 21 years.
What’s it like to get my acne scars treated with Bellafill?
The treatment is really easy. You come into your dermatologist’s office and have your face cleaned very well. Then some cooling ice packs are applied to your face. The Bellafill is injected under the scar and it just lifts it up flat with the surrounding skin. Since there is numbing medicine in the filler, the procedure is very easy to have. Your doctor will fill the scars in so they match the surrounding level skin. A few months later, you may have a second, smaller procedure to level up the scars again, then presto! The scars stay looking nicely for at least a year. There is nothing else to do. If you have other kinds of acne scars, your dermatologist may suggest combining Bellafill with other treatments that would help as well.
